Parks and Landscaping Crew

Overview:

Performs a range of duties supporting the maintenance and upkeep of Town parks, playgrounds, landscaped areas, and facilities. This position is ideally scheduled for a 40-hour workweek, though alternative schedules may be considered. The role requires flexibility to work varied hours, including weekends, as needed. The anticipated start date is May 4, 2026, with an approximate end of the season on October 5, 2026.

Reports to: Grounds Foreman, Assistant Public Works Director

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of equipment, materials and methods used in the maintenance of parks, playgrounds, landscaping, and buildings preferred but not required.
  • Prior landscaping, gardening, and irrigation experience preferred but not required. 
  • Skill in the operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform sustained physical labor in an outdoor environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Valid Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record required.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with maintenance of town parks, playgrounds and landscaping.
  • Assist with maintenance and repair of irrigation.
  • Perform various turf and garden maintenance duties, such as aeration, weeding, fertilizing, and watering.
  • Plant flowers and various other shrubs and trees.
  • Prune trees and shrubs.
  • Paint or repair various Town structures.
  • Pick up trash and maintain public walkways.
  • Clean and re-supply public bathrooms as necessary.
  • Operate equipment related to turf care and tree maintenance.
  • Operate standard pick-up trucks and utility vehicles.
  • Works in a team-based environment supporting the Public Works department, the Town of Dillon, and the initiatives of the Public Works Director, Assistant Director, and Grounds Foreman.   
  • Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.  Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment.
  • Adheres to Town of Dillon policies, standards, and regulations including but not limited to proper attire, and overall professionalism. 
  • Ability to function and make good decisions in the absence of a supervisor
  • Communicates in a professional, courteous, and timely manner both verbally and in writing when dealing with Town of Dillon employees, citizens, and visitors.

  • The noise level in the work environment is sometimes loud.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear.  The employee is frequently required to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and smell.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Equipment Used: Motorized vehicles and equipment including pick-up trucks, UTVs, riding and push behind mowers, weed trimmers, leaf blowers, soil tillers, skid-steer loaders, chainsaws, common hand and power tools, portable radios, and telephones.
