To encourage, educate and promote the love of sailing and boating in a fun, safe and professional atmosphere, while fostering continued relationships and life-long opportunities for visitors and members of the community.

Overview

The Sailing School Lead will most likely be the first contact that the student has with the sailing school. Therefore, this individual must be inviting, friendly and courteous to all students and potential students, as well as knowledgeable of the Dillon Marina facilities and offerings. In addition, the Sailing School Lead must be an enthusiastic leader and possess the ability to assist with schedule and delegate responsibilities to the sailing school staff to run an efficient and successful sailing school. The Sailing School Lead must also demonstrate an ability and willingness to promote and grow the sailing school through a collaboration between themselves, the Sailing School Coordinator and Marina management and the marketing department.

Dillon Marina Director, Managers, Supervisors and Leads

Qualifications

  • Previous sailing instruction in a professional environment, with a proven ability to demonstrate superior boat handling, docking practices and sailing techniques preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. Some continued education preferred.
  • Ability to be trained as an ASA instructor. ASA Instructor certification preferred.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred. 
  • Local sailing experience helpful.
  • Must be a strong swimmer.
  • Ability to communicate with team via a two-way radio professionally.
  • Good working knowledge of both powerboat and sailboat operations.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite, office equipment and procedures.
  • Ability to learn and master new computer programs.
  • Knowledge of standard safety precautions both on and off the water.
  • Current Red Cross CPR/AED certification- training provided.
  • Previous experience in marina operations and/or marina use.
  • Must possess strong problem-solving skills and an ability to adapt to changing program needs due to weather, number of students, number of boats, etc.
  • Ability to forecast daily weather patterns and make informed decisions based on that.
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of sailing skills and an ability to communicate them in a positive and understandable manner.  
  • Ability to speak and understand the English language proficiently. 
  • Support marina departments as needed. 
  • Must be able to use a two-way radio and communicate professionally.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for assisting in the overall coordination and scheduling of the sailing school and sailing tour department within the marina.
  • Assist in coordinating sailing instructor schedules to cover all weekday, weekend, and evening bookings for both sailing school and sailing tours.
  • Heavy phone and face-to-face interactions with customers, providing accurate information, answering questions, and making reservations. Excellent phone etiquette required.
  • Cross train with office lead to assist in opening and closing the front office.
  • Maintain sailing school and tour calendar and bookings.
  • Responsible for assisting in monitoring and ordering all sailing school materials, such as textbooks, logbooks, and exams.
  • Administer Basic Keelboat exams and submit testing paperwork to ASA for certification.
  • Provide post-course follow-up with students to ensure certifications were received and the student had a positive experience with the Dillon Marina Sailing School.
  • Assist in the development of training guidelines for sailing school, lessons and tours and provide training to marina staff. 
  • Conduct sailing lessons, sailing tours and assist with any other boat tours as needed.
  • Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment.
  • Delivers exceptional guest service to all guests at the Dillon Marina.
  • Assist in the promotion of the Dillon Marina Sailing School with marketing team.
  • Must be able to teach safety, boat handling and sailing theory aboard a variety of sailboats to beginner, intermediate and advanced sailors. 
  • Develop and follow a lesson plan for individual students enrolled in general sailing lessons. Adhere to all ASA course structures and requirements for Basic Keelboat courses.
  • Responsible for collection of all the necessary documents, signatures, and payments of all participants.
  • Responsible for notifying students of any changes in class times, postponements due to weather conditions and make-up dates. 
  • Maintain and manage accurate records of student booking requests, reservations and attendance hours, and schedule make up days and time as needed.
  • Provide maintenance and care for marina sailboat fleet, docks, and facilities. Provide maintenance records as needed.
  • Provide support to all other marina departments as needed and as assigned by marina management.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment/Physical Activities:

  • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions. 
  • Exposure to sun, heat, cold, dust, precipitation, fuel, grease and other conditions and chemicals commonly found in a marina environment. 
  • Must be capable of operating a variety of equipment, hand & power tools. Must be capable of safely maneuvering all vehicles and equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside-weather conditions.  The individual may work near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  The individual is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and may experience the risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate in the office, and moderate to loud while working outside. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate a computer, various pieces of office equipment, tools, and vehicles.

While performing the duties of this job, the individual is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.  The individual frequently is required to stand and talk or hear.  The individual is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and smell.

The individual must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Equipment Used:

Motorized vehicles and equipment, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, mobile radio, phone, computer, calculator, and copy/fax machine.
